Keeping an eye on Chertsey since 1960
Dedicated to looking after Chertsey, for everyone
The Chertsey Society is a membership amenity society with no political or religious affiliations. Since 1960 we have acted as a voice for residents on planning, heritage and the issues that shape our historic riverside town.
Diary dates
Our winter meetings are an opportunity to meet members, catch up with the latest news and enjoy a presentation. Guests are always welcome. Recent talks have ranged from a year as Mayor of Runnymede to a career in film special effects before CGI, and new research on Curfew House and Sir William Perkins. 250 years of the Third Stump
Chertsey Cricket Club's historian, Martin Allen, will tell us how significant our local cricket team is. It was during a match with Hambledon on 22nd - 23rd May 1775 that Edward “Lumpy” Stevens beat batsman John Small three times by the ball going through the middle of the two stumps then in use. The first match played with three stumps to the wicket was on 6th September 1776 against Coulsdon. Two hundred and fifty years and a lot of middle-stump wickets - and it all started in Chertsey.
